Service Levels

Remote Support: I am more than happy to provide answers to simple technical problems over the phone, but in some cases, the computer will work properly, but something complex needs to be done. In this instance, I offer a remote support option. All you need is special software on your computer to allow me to access it from here. I can install this software for free during a standard service call on request.

In-House Support: For more advanced issues or for cases where the computer requires hardware repair, I will come out to your location. If you are interested in this service, contact me and schedule an appointment time.

Takeout Support: For certain specialized tasks, I may be required to remove the computer from your premesis so I can bring it to my work area where I have more specialized tools, and more time to work on the problem.

I will diagnose any problems your computer may have, and you will not be asked to pay a cent if I am not able to provide a solution to your problem.

Specialized Services:

Hardware Upgrades: Did you make the mistake of buying a cheap computer, and now you need a faster video card, more memory, or you're running out of disk space? Maybe you're afraid you'll buy an incompatible part, or don't want to open the case and try to upgrade the system yourself. In this case, typically two in-house service calls will be scheduled. During the first service call, I will analyze your system and determine what type of hardware upgrades are available for your computer, then provide you with an estimate for the most inexpensive hardware that will not compromise reliability or performance. I require a 40% down payment on all hardware purchases up front before I order the hardware, for my own protection. Hardware typically arrives within a week, and I will make a final service call to install the new hardware for you. You will not be double charged for service calls, see my standard rates page for more information.

Reformatting\Reinstalling Windows: In some cases, a computer may be so loaded down with bloatware, spyware, and other performance degraders that the system isn't really worth trying to fix. In this case, I provide a full reformat option. Windows will be reinstalled from a factory state, or Retail copy depending on your preference. Prior to formatting your hard drive, I make a backup of folders on your hard drive that we discuss during the service call. These folders will then be put back once the format is complete. You will then have a freshly installed copy of Windows, and you can still keep all your documents, pictures, and other important media. I also ensure all hardware drivers are properly installed, as well as software applications you specify. This service is always performed as a takeout support option.

New Computers: Are you under the misconception that custom PCs are only for gamers and geeks? Maybe you think a custom computer could never be within your reach, because you've been told they are expensive. However, this is quite false. In fact, building a custom system is typically significantly cheaper than buying a name brand computer, and allows unlimited flexibility in pricing and features of the new system. Typically, custom computers involve a meeting between myself and the client, where we discuss exact needs. You can provide as many technical specifications as you like, or I can create estimated specifications based on your needs. I will then select high quality, inexpensive hardware and provide you with a final estimate. After this estimate is provided, you can choose not to buy the new computer or provide a 40% down payment. Once the payment is provided, the hardware will be ordered. Hardware typically arrives within a week, and the new computer will typically be built within a few days after that time. Then, it will be fitted with a fresh copy of Windows, or any operating system of your choosing. Licensing options will be discussed during the quote process. For more information on this service, please feel free to email or call me.

Troubleshooting of Computer Problems: Not sure what's wrong? That's okay! I can come out to your location and analyze your computer. Typically, computer problems can be diagnosed and fixed in a single in-house service call, and will be escalated to a takeout service call if the problem is serious. If I can't provide a solution to the problem, your diagnosis will have been free of charge. If you have a computer problem you'd like fixed, call me to schedule an appointment.

Internet Presence\Web Design: Have you always wanted a website for your family\dog\business\hobby? Having a website is simpler than you think. Even without any prior knowledge of computers, it is a simple matter to update a blog, or learn to design web pages in a visual editor. I can provide anything, from a complete website and web hosting solution, to suggestions on where to get started. In some cases, if you don't mind tacking a little bit on your electric bill, many broadband Internet users can even host a website on a computer out of their own home! If you are thinking about running a website but you have no idea where to go to get a .com domain, and have never heard of an FTP client or HTML code- I can still help you! However, I will remind you that I am largely a HTML\PHP coder, and I am not a graphics designer. I design basic layouts for web pages like this one. I do not design flash based, highly graphical web pages unless SWF files are provided, and I will not make complicated logos from scratch.

Networking and Security: Have you ever sat on Main Street with your laptop, and picked up a "linksys" or "netgear" network and used it? If so, you've used someone's personal Internet connection. The default configuration on most residential routers is to broadcast a completely insecure WiFi network. What does this mean for you? It means someone can drive up to your driveway with their laptop, and start using your Internet connection, printing to your networked printers, and accessing files in your shared folders! If they were to do something illegal online, it would look like you did it, because your house's Internet connection would be responsible for the behavior. You wouldn't leave your car unattended in the street with the keys in the ignition, why allow people to steal your Internet identity, network bandwidth, and peace of mind?
WiFi can be a great addition to your network, if it is properly secured. If you just got your first laptop and you want a secure wireless network, or your wireless network doesn't go as far as you'd like it to - then I can provide a multitude of services to assist you. I can perform tasks as simple as adding security to your existing network, or as complex as setting up a wireless repeater to extend the WiFi coverage to the far corners of your home. The only requirement is a 40% down payment on any hardware I need to order for the job. Aside from that, I consider networking to be a standard service call. However, I will not fish wires through walls or drill holes, sorry!

Other Services: If you're not sure whether I would be willing to take on a task, simply call me or email me and describe the nature of the job. I am a diversely knowledgeable technician, and there are far too many areas of the computer field for me to describe on a single web page. Unique situations are best discussed with me.
